We've got a great BRACES-FRIENDLY Spring recipe!

Winter is over, and the weather is finally starting to get warmer. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) spring dish that is sure to delight. Remember, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment.

Soy Simmered Chicken Wraps

Ingredients:
• 3 boneless chicken breast halves
• 2 large onions, chunked
• Small flour tortillas (pkg. of ten) wheat or white
• (optional: 10-16 oz. of cooked chopped broccoli)
• ¼ cup soy sauce
• ¼ cup water
• 2 Tablespoons honey
• 1/8 teaspoon ginger
• 2 Tablespoons peach or apricot jam
• 1 Tablespoon cornstarch

Directions

In a slow cooker, or a large pan on the stove, layer the onions and the chicken breast. Allow at least three hours in the slow cooker on medium, or at least one hour on the stove—the longer the better, but you don’t have to do anything to it while it cooks. Spoon out the chicken onto a cutting board, and with a knife and fork, shred the chicken as finely as you’d like. In a small saucepan, stir all sauce ingredients together over medium heat until the mixture starts bubbling, then let it simmer for five minutes on low heat to thicken. In a serving bowl, stir sauce and onion into chicken; if you’d like, add cooked chopped broccoli. Makes about six to eight servings.

What's the difference between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming orthodontists, Dr. Terry Dischinger and Dr. Bill Dischinger started out in dental school and earned a dental degree, just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Terry and Bill Dischinger decided they wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So they stayed in school for a few more years and became experts in orthodontics, which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn't it nice to know there are dental experts here at Dischinger Orthodontics to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

The Oral Health Effects of Smoking

Everybody knows that smoking causes lung cancer, but did you also know that smokers and tobacco users are susceptible to a variety of oral health problems at a faster rate than non-smokers?

It’s true! Smoking is responsible for almost 75 percent of gum disease in adults; and, similar to smokers, adults who smoke pipes and cigars, as well as those using smokeless tobacco, are just as susceptible to gum disease and other tobacco related health problems.

As soon as you use tobacco products, you become more likely to experience any of these oral health problems:

• Oral cancer
• Gum disease
• Tooth loss
• Loss of bone in the jaw
• Gum recession
• Delayed/impaired healing process after oral surgery or any other treatment
• Decreased success rate of dental implant (tooth replacement) procedures
• Mouth sores
• Loss of your sense of taste and smell
• Bad breath
• Tooth and tongue stains

If you are interested in protecting your oral health, we strongly recommend you quit using tobacco products! The following steps are recommended by the Surgeon General to help you quit smoking and using tobacco:

• Get ready – set a quitting date and remove all materials from your home, car and office
• Get support
• Learn new skills and behaviors
• Get medication and use it correctly
• Be prepared for relapse or difficult situations

April is National Facial Protection Month!

With spring here, many children, teens and adults will once again pick up the ball, bring the bat out of seasonal retirement, and lace up their cleats to hit the fields for the return of spring sports! April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger and our dedicated team urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

How important is your smile?

In fact, in a new poll conducted by Glamour Magazine, people were asked, “If you had to pick between having perfect teeth, eyesight or hair, which would you choose?

Well, 44 percent of folks out there are choosing teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or AACD, conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Respondents said straightness, whiteness, cleanliness, as well as the sincerity and sparkle of a person’s smile were all important factors not only socially, but career-wise as well.

Dischinger Orthodontics Case of the Month

Are you an adult that wants to have their teeth straightened but just can’t do the 1 to 2 years of orthodontic treatment that is required? You’ve also learned that the Invisalign treatment is just not the right answer because the crowding of your teeth is just a little more than you’re comfortable with and the canines need some significant movement; something that is very difficult to achieve with clear aligners.

Dischinger Orthodontics has a nice solution for this type of case. We place brackets on the teeth from first premolar to first premolar and we bond a wire on the buccal surface from the first premolar to the first molar in each quadrant to prevent any unwanted movements of the posterior teeth, thus holding their current Class I occlusion. Then we’re able to use the braces to quickly and efficiently move the anterior teeth from canine to canine. The patient then visits our office once a month and is able to finish their treatment in 4 months.

This is exactly what we did for Dischinger Orthodontics patient Scott, and it proved to be the perfect solution. He did not want to go through full orthodontics, yet we felt we couldn’t deliver a quality result using Invisalign in his case. As you can see by his treatment photos, the result was beautiful with a great occlusal result as well. Again, this was attained in just 4 months of treatment! The cost is, of course, less for this treatment as well, allowing adults to do something they have always wanted to do while also being affordable. This treatment is also ideal for patients that previously had orthodontics but have relapsed some.

Here’s what Scott said about his treatment:

“My orthodontic treatment was wonderful. It was done in such a short time at a cost I could afford. I really think this is a treatment that a lot of people out there would be interested in if they knew about it.”

Anyone, at any age, can benefit from Orthodontic Treatment

Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Drs. Bill Dischinger, and Terry Dischinger will tell you that anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation at Dischinger Orthodontics and find out how orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!

Which toothbrush should my child use?

Dr. Terry Dischinger and Dr. Bill Dischinger will tell you that brushing your teeth is one of the easiest methods of cavity prevention. But which type of toothbrush should your child use? When choosing a toothbrush, look for round-ended (polished) bristles that clean while being gentle on the gums. Choose one that is specifically designed for children's smaller mouths and hands. Also, look for large handles that can help children control the toothbrush. Lastly, throw out a toothbrush after three months or sooner if the bristles are fraying. Frayed bristles can harm your gums, and are not as effective in cleaning teeth.

As far as which toothpaste is best? It doesn't matter as long as it has fluoride in it. However, for small children who tend to swallow toothpaste, do not use fluoridated toothpaste. Make sure to touch each tooth and every side of that tooth. Also, you do need to gently brush on your gums.

National Children’s Dental Health Month is here!

Each February for the past 61years, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

Parsley and Other Ways to Brighten Your Smile

At Dischinger Orthodontics, we see lots of patients concerned about their bad breath. So we want to educate you about what you can do to really keep your chompers clean and breath minty fresh!

Naturally, good oral hygiene is the first step. With proper brushing and regular dental checkups you can keep bad breath (halitosis) in check.

In the meantime, here are some home remedies to keep you smiling bright from Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger.

Spice Up Your Life
Snack on some cloves, fennel, or anise after each particularly odorous snack.

Don’t forget the tongue
Lots of people brush their teeth regularly, but leave the tongue alone. One of the main causes of bad breath is food and plaque residue on the surface of your tongue. So give it a nice gentle brush-over too!

Watch your drinking habits
The worst options are coffee, wine, whiskey, and beer.

Frequent brushing
Carry a toothbrush with you so brushing after each meal is convenient and refreshing! Trust us, you’ll love the way it makes you feel. If you can’t brush, still swish around a couple sips of water to remove any lingering food.

Make your own Gargle
Gargling with a home mixture of sage, calendula, and myrrh gum extracts four times a day should ward off that bad breath potential.

Parsley’s there for a reason
Finish your parsley after you finish your dinner and you’ll find a refreshing breath enhancer. Hate the texture? Throw a couple sprigs in a blender to sip after each meal.

Don’t cut that cheese
The stronger the cheese, the stinkier your breath can become. Think about blue cheese and Roquefort? They really get the party started in your mouth and it’s hard to make them leave!

Cold and Flu Season is Here, Consider Replacing Your Toothbrush!

Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Terry and Bill Dischinger will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Cool kids get braces with the Dischinger Team!

Braces today are “cool” and—many would say—even “fun.” These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as Invisalign and the Damon System, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Have you thanked a veteran lately? November 11 is Veterans Day - the perfect holiday for thanking and honoring those who have serve and have served our country at home and abroad. Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your orthodontic treatment? If yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting The Dischinger Team, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. A braces-friendly recipe, in celebration of National Orthodontic Health Month!

Dr. Bill and Terry Dischinger and our team know how tempting Halloween and this time of the year can be for your sweet tooth. With all of the hard, sticky, crunchy, and chewy candy that is often passed around to trick-or-treaters, we know that it can sometimes be hard to find orthodontic-friendly options.

However, there is good news! Today, we would like to share a great braces-friendly Halloween recipe with all of our patients, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontics, or AAO. This Spooktacular Pumpkin Cake is delicious, and provided that you remember to brush and floss after indulging, this treat will not cause damage to your beautiful smile.

Spooktacular Pumpkin Cake

Ingredients:

1 pkg. yellow or white cake mix
½ cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
¾ cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
¼ cup water (add 2 tbl. of water if eggs are small)

Directions:

Put cake mix in a large bowl. Make an indentation in the center and pour in the oil and one egg. Mix using mixer, then add the rest of the eggs one at a time, beating after each one.

Add pumpkin, sugar, spices, and then water.

Bake in greased and floured tube pan in 350 degree oven for 60-70 minutes (depending on oven calibration). Cool before removing from pan.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month

Can you believe October is already upon us? October happens to be National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

If you happen to damage your braces, please give Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger and our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our office.

Top ten tips for keeping your BRACES sparklin’ clean

Keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever when you have braces. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these top ten tips:

1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. Age 7 is the magic number for an orthodontic check-up

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to see The Dischinger Team for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. Everyone loves fun facts. Fun, fun, fun! The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that Drs. Terry and Bill Dischinger thought you might enjoy.

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.

• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.

• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.

• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.

• Wires activated by body heat used in today's braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.

• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.

Dr. Terry Dischinger inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

Dr. Terry Dischinger was recently bestowed an honor that very few achieve. As you may know, he was a starter on the 1960 US Olympic Basketball team which won the Gold Medal. For over 40 years, this was the considered the best basketball team ever assembled. In 1992, the Dream Team played in the Olympics, and debate has raged ever since as to which team was better. The 1960 team included Dr. Terry, who went on to win the 1962 NBA Rookie of the Year award in a 9 year career that included 3 All Star Game appearances. Also on the team were Hall of Famers Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas and Walt Bellamy.

On August 13, 2010, the 1960 and 1992 Olympic Teams were inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. The weekend was filled with many highlights, with the induction ceremony being televised. Very few basketball players ever make it to the NBA let alone win a Gold Medal, Rookie of the Year, and now get inducted to the Hall of Fame. This was one of Dr. Terry's highlights of his basketball life.

Along with Terry for the weekend was his wife Mary. In addition, Dr. Bill took his oldest son Taylor and his father in law Larry. Dr. Terry's daughter Kelly made the trip. Dr. Terry's other son, Terry Jr. was supposed to have been along as well. Unfortunately, he passed away on July 22, just weeks before the weekend. In his place, his two oldest children, Alex and David made the trip.

For the whole family, this was one of the greatest weekends ever. They met every basketball star you could imagine, including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, and many others. It was an amazing, amazing weekend that the family will never forget.

This summer, as you and the family head to out to the ball game—whether it’s at a Major League park or the local tee ball game, The Dischinger Team wants to remind you to stay healthy. It is important it is to make smart, healthy choices when it comes to snacks and drinks. Here are some tips you can use to avoid greasy, ballpark foods:

1. Eat before you go!

2. What are you drinking? Water is always a cheap, refreshing option. Gatorade, Powerade and VitaminWater work as well, though keep in mind their sugar levels. Remember to stay hydrated in the hot weather!

3. Bring your own snacks. Remember that these must be in unopened packages when you enter the gates.

4. Before the game, get some exercise. You’ll be sitting for two- to three hours at the game, so be sure to take a walk or a light run before you head out.

5. Calories, calories, calories. From hot dogs to fries to pizza, the ballpark stands typically sell high-caloric foods. But most venues will also offer healthier options, such as crab cakes, chicken sandwiches, turkey wraps or soups and salads.

Did you know the month of May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? Twenty seven years ago, President Reagan encouraged Americans - young and older - to incorporate more activity into their lives, and the reminder is even more important in this day and age, as kids everywhere are distracted more and more by TV, social networking and video games. Drs. Dischinger and our team will tell you that children and teens living an active lifestyle can improve their health, productivity and overall well-being.

At Dischinger Orthodontics, we always encourage our patients to stay fit by exercising or participating in sports. However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of facial protection when playing sports. The importance of retainers, from Dischinger Team Orthodontics

Now that you've completed treatment at Dischinger Team Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! After your braces were removed, Drs. Bill or Terry have probably provided you with retainers. The reason retainers are important is that after braces are removed, teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization and are the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until Drs. Terry or Bill instruct otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

Did you know that April is National Facial Protection Month? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of the 7 million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by people between ages 5 and 24. At Dischinger Team Orthodontics, we want our patients to stay safe this spring. Wearing a mouth guard is one of the easiest and least expensive forms of facial protection and helps prevent potential lifelong jaw and mouth problems!

This year, the American Association of Orthodontists has teamed up with sports legend Emmitt Smith to remind athletes with and without braces that mouth guards and other forms of facial protection help avoid serious injuries. Sleep disorders and treatment options in Lake Oswego and Portland

Drs. Terry and Bill Dischinger know sleep disorders are fairly common, with around 50 to 70 million Americans being affected by some type chronic sleep disorder, with some of these progressing to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which can cause loss of sleep and other health issues. Snoring is one of the most easily identified symptoms, and as it worsens can lead to full airway blockage while you sleep, which can severely disrupt your sleep patterns.

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem that, if left untreated, can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. It can also take a toll on your energy level, as the condition causes an ongoing state of fatigue.

There are several different approaches to sleep apnea treatment, including:

• Surgery to the jaws or airway tissue to open the airway. This is typically only used in the most severe cases.
• Continuous airway pressure therapy which involves a mask and machine (CPAP machine) to keep your throat muscles and tissue open while sleeping
• Oral appliance therapy, a less intrusive method involving a customized oral device that positions your jaw in a favorable position to keep your airway open while you sleep.

If you suspect that you may suffer from a sleep disorder or sleep apnea, please give us a call at 971-925-6012, and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist. The specialist may recommend a "sleep study" to diagnose the precise extent of the problem, and can prescribe appropriate treatment. Depending on your situation, treatment may involve an oral device that Drs. Dischinger can custom-create for you.

Spring may be a time for sports, sun and fun, but it's also a time when you have to be careful if you play sports. At Dischinger Team Orthodontics, we know how important it is to protect your face and pearly whites while participating in sports activities. With spring around the corner, Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger know the spring months bring an increase in outdoor activities—and a greater chance of damaging your precious mouth and pearly whites. Our dedicated team at Family Orthodontics also know sports-related injuries are common among children. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 70 percent of parents said their biggest worry is that their child will get injured while playing sports.

That’s why our team is doing its part to spread the word that facial sports injuries can be avoided simply by reminding your kids to wear mouth guards. If you play sports, it's important that you consult us for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing contact sports. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are your discomfort as you would treat any general soreness.

And, ask us—Drs. Dischinger will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment. The AAO has provided the following tips for keeping your kids safe on the field this spring. Please remind them to:

• Wear mouth guards during contact sports
• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eye wear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant—even as a spectator

All of these can reduce injuries. Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger are trying to achieve. The advantage of Invisalign® at Dischinger Team Orthodontics

Part of what makes Invisalign really "work" is that the treatment is customizable for pretty much anyone. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing Drs. Bill and Terry Dischinger do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next, our doctors use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. Meet Our Orthodontists

Dr. Terry Dischinger graduated from Garfield High School in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1958. He earned his BS in chemical engineering in 1963 at Purdue University. After his undergraduate studies, he attended the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Nashville, where he received both the Faculty Award and the Sidney Friedman Award for Excellence in Periodontology. Dr. Terry earned his DDS in 1974 and was also Valedictorian of his class. Combining his love of engineering and dentistry, he continued his education earning his MSD from the University of Oregon Health Science Center in 1977.

Dr. Terry with his Wife Terry and his wife, Mary, were married June 2, 1962. They were college sweethearts and by Terry's own admission, it was love at first sight. They have three children and nine grandchildren. Terry and Mary enjoy a wide range of activities together including reading, sports, golf, boogie boarding, snorkeling, dinners out and church activities, where he and Mary lead a Bible study group. Above all, they enjoy spending time with family and grandchildren.

Terry's previous career before becoming an orthodontist is filled with honors and distinctions. These include: three-time All-American in basketball; 1960 Olympic Gold medalist in basketball; 1962-1963 NBA Rookie of the Year; three-time NBA All-Star; Purdue University Hall of Fame; National High School Sports Hall of Fame; Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame; nine-year career in the National Basketball Association; and serving as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Bill Dischinger has worked as a partner with his father, Terry, for over 10 years now. This has been the fulfillment of a dream. They have learned much together over these years, as clinicians, partners, and father and son. The Dischinger Team have been great together, and will only continue to improve.

Dr. Bill grew up in Lake Oswego and graduated from Lake Oswego High School where he was an all-state basketball player and earned all-district honors in football and golf. Following high school, Dr. Bill attended Oregon State University for his undergraduate studies and continued to the University of Oregon Health Science Center where he earned his DMD in 1997. His certificate in orthodontics was earned in 1999 at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Kari Lynn Hayes, who is also from Lake Oswego. Kari Lynn is certified as a neonatal intensive care nurse and takes care of their family. They are the proud parents of four boys: Taylor, Turner, and their twins, Trey and Tristan. Dr. Bill and his wife enjoy long walks together, traveling to new and exciting places, and trying new restaurants. He is an avid golfer and plays as much as possible. However, spending time with his family is his number one hobby. Dr. Bill has many interests and hobbies outside of the practice including activities within his church, family time, and spending as much time as possible with his four sons (who he will admit are a handful)!
